Christmas 2011 Turkey Shoot

The GRGCC Christmas Turkey Shoot 2011 was held in (almost) sweltering conditions on Saturday, 3 December . . . .  or was it the intense pressure-to-perform that made us sweat?

The competition day started with handgun events. When the smoke settled and the whining died out on the short-gun range, it was revealed that the following events were won by the indicated folks:

·        Paper Turkey – Kevin T

·        Xmas Tree – Kevin T

·        Dave Mundell Memorial Trophy (Novice) – Gerry G

·        Irene Cuthbertson Memorial Trophy (Ladies Silhouette) – Marie B

·        Open Silhouette – Don I

The rifle competition produced the following winners:

·        100 yds Open ( any calibre, any sight) – Thor S

·        50 yds rimfire (open sights) – Paul M

·        25 yds rimfire (open sights) – Bob R

Lunch consisted of Denaige’s Moose & Venison Chili with side fixin’s and No-Cal desserts ( Wink ). ‘Seconds’ were popular (I hope I didn’t kill any Club profits). Thanks to Marie, Mavis and Sheila for laying-out the lunch table.

The scatter-gunners hurried through lunch to get on-station to knock down some clay pigeons. There were 9 turkeys handed-out to winners of various trap lines. Family T (a Father-Son act) managed to capture almost half of’em!

Gabriola Smallbore Silhouette Shooters excel at Provincials

by Imelda Cuthberston

(as printed in the Gabriola Sounder, Monday, March 28 2011 )

Four members of the Gabriola Rod, Gun and Conservation Club participated in the BC Provincial Shoot held in Mission last weekend. For two of our Youth Shooters, Sabrina Meyer and John Furnell, it was their first foray into this level of competition, as well as for Bev Hoover. Shooters from Prince George, Kamloops, Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland as well as Washington State came prepared to do their best. Of course it didnt help ones nerves that we were greeted with below zero temperatures and snow for the early start on Saturday morning, making a steady trigger pull considerably more difficult! With Steve and parents to support and encourage us, we got under way.

We were all delighted with our results especially as some of us shot our personal bests. Sabrina shot so well in her first match that she was moved up a class into AA for the rest of the tournament. By the tournament
s end Sabrina had shot a 29/40, a 28/40 as well as downed two sets of five animals, and in the final match, two sets of ten animals in succession at 40 m and again at 60 m. John also managed to score above his class in two of his six matches with a 24 being his best score. Bev shot steadily in her class while Imelda managed her personal best, scoring a 32/40 in her first match. We all gained a lot of experience and enjoyed meeting fellow enthusiasts from other parts of the West.

The final results were: Bev Hoover - one 2nd in Standard Rifle and two 2nd in Hunter Rifle in A class. John Furnell - two 1st and one 2nd in Standard Rifle, and two 1st and one 2nd in Hunter Rifle plus the Aggregate awards for both guns in A class. Sabrina Meyer - two 2nd in Standard Rifle and one 1st plus two 2nd in Hunter Rifle. She won the 2nd place Hunter Aggregate plaque as well as the top Junior Awards for both Rifles. Imelda Cuthbertson  one 1st and one 2nd in Standard Rifle, and one 2nd and one 3rd in Hunter Rifle. She won the 2nd place Standard Rifle Aggregate for AA class and 3rd place Hunter Aggregate for AAA class and received the Top Lady award in Hunter class.
